PEOPLE in the Cotswolds will get to see the work of one of the country's most popular and distinctive artists.

Whitewall galleries in Cirencester is staging a new exhibition of original works and rare signed editions from LS Lowry, to be displayed alongside selected works from contemporary artists he has inspired and influenced.

Lowry is famous for his unique paintings of 'matchstick' figures set against the industrial landscapes in the first half of the 20th century.

Lowry's work records with sensitivity and wit his own personal view of the people and architecture of northern England. His highly sought-after masterpieces range from classic industrial scenes to local landscapes and landmarks.

Remembered as a man of remarkable resilience and sensitivity, Lowry stood alone, unaffected by the influences of other artists, and his inspiration came entirely from his own experience.

His works now critical acclaim. The most important private and public collections in Britain and abroad now hold his paintings and drawings.

Lowry exhibited with the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts from 1919, as well as entering paintings in the Paris Salon. By the early 1930s he was exhibiting at the Royal Academy in London.

He was awarded an honorary MA at Manchester University in 1945, and Doctor of Letters in 1961, elected to the Royal Academy in 1962, and given freedom of the City of Salford in 1965. Many other honours followed later.

Many people associate Lowry with the “matchstick men” that became virtually his trademark, but he also produced a large number of empty landscapes and seascapes which are now recognised as masterpieces in their own right.

Gallery manager Sarah Thomson said: “In the last 20 years Lowry has become one of the country’s most highly prized artists.

"Our collection of rare signed editions represents a superb opportunity for investors, collectors or first time buyers to acquire a piece of our heritage from a 20th-century master.”

The exhibition is from Saturday, January 27, to Sunday, January 28. More information from cirencester@whitewallgalleries.com or call 01285 659 769.
