Perpetua Press Floodlit Cup

Tuffley Rovers 1

Brimscombe & Thrupp 2

Brimscombe and Thrupp's second cup tie in four days saw Sam Prior's side progress to the next round of the Perpetua Press Floodlit Cup with victory over Tuffley Rovers, writes Richard Joyce.

After defeating Frampton United in the Gloucestershire Challenge Trophy at the weekend, the Lilywhites made it back-to-back cup victories thanks to goals from Ollie Pitt and Harrison Reeves.

From as early as the sixth minute Brimscombe took the lead against their Hellenic Premier Division counterparts at Glevum Park. Pitt was brought down on the edge of the box and the penalty specialist stepped up to slot past Dave Evans to give his side an early advantage.

Leading at half time, Pitt was denied what looked to be almost a certain goal immediately after the break.

His shot on goal after a sweeping team move was superbly cleared off the line with a last ditch block by Kieran Squires.

Nevertheless, the Brimscombe lead was doubled a minute later. Former Bristol City youngster Reeves' unstoppable left footed shot from 20 yards extended the Lilywhites' deserved advantage.

Tuffley would pull a goal back midway through the second half to add some extra spice to the second period.

Brett James' good work on the right saw him cross for Shayne Bradley, and the ex-Southampton and Mansfield Town forward thumped home from inside the box.

The home side struggled in their search for an equaliser, and it was in fact Brimscombe who would come closest to finding the games next goal.

Evans prevented Sam Blackie from hitting the back of the net following a speedy counter-attack move on 77 minutes with a key stop, as Tuffley struggled to muster the goal they needed to draw level in the final stages, that saw Brimscombe claim their place in the next round.
