THIS weekend’s Stroud Wassail Festival is set to be the largest in the country, as hundreds of flamboyant performers descend on Stroud.

On Saturday more than thirty Mummers and Morris Dancers from all over the country will bring their colourful displays to the town’s streets and venues.

“This year’s Wassail will be twice the size of last year’s,” said festival chairman Robin Burton.

“Our aim is to bring a bit of joy into one of the darkest and most miserable time of year, boost trade, encourage a bit of community spirit, and help support some local charities,” he explained.

For thousands of years Wassailing has traditionally been a time to toast the good health of friends and family.

Lucky spectators should expect Wassail songs, colourful costumes, music, Morris dancing, hobby horses and The Broad.
