A 46-YEAR-old Cirencester man who was arrested in the early hours of New Year's Day is being questioned about several burglaries in Cirencester.

Police arrested the local man at 5am on January 1 at Cirencester Bowls Club.

The man was detained and arrested as police, who were conducting inquiries into other burglaries that night, believed he was attempting to burgle the club premises.

One of the incidents that police are questioning the man about is a break-in at a shop in Cricklade Street.

Police received a call at 3am. A skylight above the shop's offices was smashed through and burglars climbed down into the business.

A safe was opened but it was not locked and nothing was kept in it. When officers attended, nobody was at the premises.

The man is also being questioned about another attempted break-in at a business on Ashcroft Road where a window on the back door had been broken to gain entry.

Police received a call for the incident at 4am.

Nothing was stolen but while conducting inquiries at 5am, the 46-year-old suspect was identified at the neighbouring property, the Bowls Club.

The suspect is being questioning about an incident at Budgens on Chesterton Lane, as well as other recent burglaries, Sergeant Garrett Gloyn confirmed.

The incident at Budgens also happened overnight on New Year's Day. It was found that somebody had broken into the coin box for the jet wash.

The 46-year-old has been released under investigation while police pursue forensic inquiries.
