STORM Eleanor will hit the country as people are advised to beware of "very strong" winds tonight and tomorrow.
Gusts of 70mph are likely and the Met Office has issued a yellow warning between 6pm today and 6pm tomorrow.
The warning is in place for England, and some parts of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
People travelling to and from work tonight and tomorrow have been warned that public transport could be disrupted or cancelled and some bridges are likely to be closed.
Power cuts and disruption to other services (mobile phones for example) may also occur, and injuries from flying debris are possible, the weather service warned.
Storm Eleanor will be developing tonight and will move eastwards across the country.
Insurer Aviva is advising residents and businesses to protect themselves and their property.
People are advised to:
- park their cars in a garage or away from large trees
- check for loose tiles on the roof
- secure any weak fencing
- store away any garden furniture and equipment
- make sure all doors and windows are closed
- and in the event of an electrical storm, to remove the aerial from the TV set
