Gloucestershire County Council has issued an update on today's weather and how it has affected the county:

Highways crews were out from 10.30pm last night treating the roads into the early hours of Wednesday morning as the rain turned to snow.

Five inches of snow fell in the Cotswolds alone.

Crews went back out for another salt run at 3am, and were fitted with snow ploughs to help clear the snow that had already covered Gloucestershire.

Grit crews will be out on of the county’s roads again from 1pm this afternoon to top up salt levels before tonight’s freezing temperatures kick in.

On top of the snow, high winds and torrential downpours also caused problems on the roads this morning, with localised flooding and fallen trees meaning that some were blocked off.

Crews have been out with chainsaws to help clear away the trees and get these roads reopened as quickly as possible.

During the night the county council’s out of hours team raised 58 different emergency calls including over 40 trees down, 11 flooding incidents and road closures on behalf of Gloucestershire Police.

Since 9am this morning a further 45 calls from residents have been received, with more trees down on the county’s roads.

Kath Haworth, highways operation manager at Gloucestershire County Council, said: “It has been a busy night for our teams and I’m grateful for all the effort they’ve put in to help keep the county moving in difficult conditions.

“You can help by checking in on any vulnerable or elderly neighbours to see if they’re alright, especially if they’re affected by any of the issues with power and water.

“Crews will be out treating the roads this afternoon and again through the night as the temperatures drop below zero. If you see anything our roads then please report it on 08000 514 514.”
