FIREFIGHTERS in Kingsland, Herefordshire, had to remove masonry from a chimney to check that it has cooled down sufficiently to be safe after a fire.
They were helped by a crew from Leominster.
Here is what to do if you have a chimney fire:
Call the fire brigade on 999.
If you have an open fire gently splash water on it to extinguish the fire.
Move flammable materials away from the fireplace.
Feel the chimney breast throughout the house. If it is getting hot move furniture away.
Do not pour salt on the fire. This can create a dangerous gas.
Ensure that the fire brigade can get into the loft space.
If you have a stove shut all air vents and dampers to reduce the fire's oxygen supply.
