A HARE that was sold at auction has returned to Fairford after being brought back by a local businessman.

Maurice the Hare was part of the Cirencester March Hare Trail that ran from March through to September this year.

He was sold at auction on October 14, to an unnamed woman from near Tewksbury, for £480.

Unable to attend the auction, Les Webb of LR Engineering tracked down the woman who agreed to sell Maurice and allow for his return to the town.

He said: “I was unable to attend the auction and it went through and slipped the net around Fairford. I spoke to Vanessa Lawrence, Town Clerk for Fairford Town Council and we agreed we needed it to come back.

“After explaining the value and the history of the Hare, she agreed to sell it back to LR Engineering.

“We have donated the Hare back to the town to keep and are thankful the lady agreed to sell it back to us.

“All the thanks must go to Vanessa and the council.”

The town council have located a suitable position for Maurice to be placed at the top of Fairford High Street.
