SWINDON Town have issued a statement thanking the 281 supporters who made the trip north for Saturday's postponed League Two clash at Accrington Stanley.

The club said they wanted to "applaud your loyalty and continued support'', referring to the fans who trekked the 200 miles, only for the Wham Stadium fixture to be called off two and a half hours before kick-off.

That led to criticism in some quarters of referee David Webb's decision which had come only a couple of hours after the match had been declared as on after an earlier pitch inspection.

The club statement said: "Due to unforeseen circumstances our Sky Bet League Two fixture against Accrington Stanley was postponed on Saturday.

"During the morning leading up to the postponement we were in constant communication with Accrington to ensure our fans were updated with news on whether the fixture would go ahead.

"Unfortunately, due to the conditions deteriorating further, the decision was taken to postpone the fixture.

"We would like to thank all 281 Town fans who made the journey to Accrington and we applaud your loyalty and continued support.

"We are now working with Accrington and the EFL to reschedule the fixture and as soon as we have this confirmed this will be communicated via our normal channels.''
