A 57-year-old man from Cheltenham has been arrested on suspicion of making an explosive substance for unlawful purposes, following a pre-planned operation.

The man was arrested this morning and remains in custody, with police stating that the incident is not being treated as terror related. 

Three properties in Brooklyn Road, Cheltenham, have been evacuated and people are being urged to avoid the area. 

The police are working with other emergency services to ensure everyone’s safety with more searches expected to continue today and tomorrow. 

Meanwhile, officers from Gloucestershire Constabulary have responded on social media to concerns raised by residents.

ACC Julian Moss said: “We are aware of questions being raised regarding previous activity at an address in Brooklyn Road.

“The public have raised valid concerns and we are fully informed of everything that has taken place previously in the area and are working with all agencies involved to understand the facts that have led us to the latest events. 

“We will release more information as and when it is appropriate."
