A MAN is in police custody following a stabbing in Highworth last night.

Officers were called to an incident in Swindon Street, close to Sammy's takeaway restaurant, at around 10.40pm.

On arrival they found that a man had been stabbed in the hand.

Witnesses reported seeing a number of police cars and an ambulance arrive on the scene before the officers sped off in search of a suspect in the area around St Michael's Avenue, Church View and Stapleton Close.

The Adver understands that officers on foot were assisted by a police dog unit as they search for the person believed to be responsible for the attack.

It is believed that the suspect was located in a block of flats off St Michael's Avenue. A lone police car was still stationed outside the building at midnight last night with officers inside carrying out their investigation.

This morning, Wiltshire Police have released more details about the incident.

A spokesman for the force said: "We were called to an incident on Swindon Street in Highworth at around 10.40pm on Tuesday night.

"A 21-year-old man was located with serious injuries to his hand and was taken to hospital for treatment. His condition is not life threatening.

"A 49-year-old man was arrested and taken to Gablecross Police Station.

"We’d like to reassure the public that we believe this to be an isolated incident. Anyone with information who has not already spoken to police should call 101.”
