PUPILS at Bradon Forest School visited Morocco as part of the World Challenge expedition.

14 Year 11 pupils embarked on the trip in July after raising enough money for the challenge.

The trip included trekking in the Atlas Mountains, a project in a Berber village school and experiences in the city of Marrakech.

Pupils undertook a variety of tasks at the Berber village primary school called Ecole Imzour, which has suffered water damage due to flooding.

The pupils excavated a 30m long deep trench around the school and filled it with concrete.

They constructed walls, renovated the gardens and cleared up the current area of land used as a rubbish area for the school.

With money left from the budget they paid for heaters in classrooms and a boiler in the teacher’s living quarters.

The challengers also had the experience of staying with a Berber family, learning about local customs and cuisine, including Berber Tea and Tagines.

This was followed by a four-day trek through the Atlas Mountains. The pupils stayed in tents and carried day sacks with their essential items and safety kit, as they dealt with the terrain, steep slopes and high temperatures.

To finish the trip the pupils spent a day in Marrakech.

The group was led by Gren Heathcote, assistant headteacher and Andy Hartley, head of PE.

The World Challenge team are fundraising for their next expedition. They will visit Nepal during Easter 2018.
