FARMERS went head-to-head over the weekend at the Fairford, Faringdon, Filkins and Burford 69th Annual Ploughing Match and Country Show.

Held at Southrop Farm in Lechlade on Saturday (September 30), the event has evolved a lot over the years from humble beginnings into a large country show with plenty to see and do.

The show aims to raise money for a variety of local charities and voluntary organisations, and came about in 1947 when four local farming clubs merged their respective ploughing matches.

The four clubs had been set up during World War Two by the Ministry of Agriculture in order to avoid a food shortage, and were encouraged to adopt more efficient methods of production.

Standard photographers Simon Pizzey and Paul Nicholls headed down to Lechlade to get in on the action.
