SPEEDWATCH campaigners in Minety are calling for action over the number of people breaking the speed limit as they use the village like a ‘rat run’.

Ewan Morrison says the team of seven regularly catch people driving faster than the 30mph limit through the village.

He has also described several shocking near-miss incidents including a time when one driver decided to overtake which led to an oncoming car having to mount a kerb in order to avoid a crash.

Ewan said the "ridiculous" overtaking manoeuvres often take place on the B4040 and in Silver Street and Hornbury Hill and are down to people not slowing down from the 50mph zone.

“There’s nothing in place to discourage them from speeding.

“We get a lot of cement and gravel trucks using that route and even had them overtaking.

“There are incidents daily and nothing really to stop people doing it.

“I’d like to see highways or Wiltshire Council actually do something like physical barriers that’s going to cause people to slow down”.

Ewan said he feels so strongly about the matter that he has joined the parish council to “see if I can help make things better”.

He is encouraging any residents to go to a parish council meeting at the village hall tomorrow night. The meeting begins at 7.30pm but people attending are advised to arrive from 7.15pm for the public discussion to take place beforehand.

Wiltshire Council has been asked for comment.
