SWINDON Robins skipper Jason Doyle moved back into the lead of the Speedway GP series after round eight at the wonderful Polish circuit in Gorzow.

A winner at this venue 12 months ago, the Australian could finish only third in the 2017 final won by Britain’s Tai Woffinden with Patryck Dudek in second place.

Doyle will have been delighted that previous series leader 'Magic' Janowski could card just six points, failing to qualify for the knockout races. The Aussie now leads the series by three points from Janowski, with Dudek a point further back on 93.

The big winner on the night was undoubtedly Woffinden (89) whose 18 points moved him into fifth place just eight points behind the Robin. Woffinden had surprisingly gone 17 GPs since his victory and seems to be the form man after scoring 32 points in the last two rounds. Woffinden must now quietly fancy his chances of a third world title.

The series moves to Teterow in northern Germany on September 13 and Doyle will take heart from his triumph there last year.

Elsewhere King’s Lynn’s Robert Lambert, winner of the European Under-19 title two weeks earlier, claimed the Under-21 championship in Daugavpils, Latvia.

With Belle Vue’s Craig Cook almost certain to be racing in the GP series next season, things are looking up for British riders.
