Malmesbury Vics 1
Chard Town 0

MALMESBURY Vics made it two wins in five days on Saturday when they ground out a hard-fought 1-0 win against Chard Town.

The Vics played into a very strong wind in the first half and the visitors piled on early pressure.

However, Chard were limited to some speculative long-range efforts.

The best chance of the opening exchanges fell to the Vics. After some lovely interplay between Kieran Jones and Krystian Hext, the ball switched to Andy Baker who drove into the box but found his effort well saved.

The hosts' task was made even more difficult after 20 minutes when Hext was sent off for slapping a Chard player in the face when getting up from a challenge.

The remaining 10 players rolled their sleeves up and proved hard to break down. They then started getting a foothold in the game and deservedly took the lead after 26 minutes.

The impressive Baker drove down the left flank and got to the byline. After a lovely one-two with Shane Bumphrey, Baker slotted the ball under the keeper from eight yards.

The Vics could have doubled their lead 10 minutes later when Neurin Jones' shot crashed back off the crossbar and was cleared.

The second half was a quieter affair and chances were few and far between.

Chard had a couple of goalbound efforts both of which were blocked by their own players.

The 10-man Vics didn't manage to create much going forward but were not unduly pressed to hold on to their goal advantage.

The Vics travel to Bishops Sutton on Tuesday night hoping to make it three on the bounce, before entertaining Bishops Lydeard in the Les Phillips Cup next Saturday at the Flying Monk.
