The Players Club 2½ South Cerney 3½
THE Players Club just north of Bristol was a new venue for South Cerney seniors and an unknown course for most of the team.
Despite the unfamiliar surroundings and the novelty of wide, undulating greens, the team notched another away victory in the blustery conditions.
Victories for captain Dave Mitchell and Andy Taylor by 5&4, Phil Stansfield and Rod German by 3&2 and Keith Hughes and Ian Haslam (1 up), were followed by a very tight halved match, in which Pete Chart and Chris Huckle fought back from three down to level with a birdie on the 18th hole.
Close defeats for Brian Whittaker & Frankie Shaw and Steve Kaufmann & Nigel Rawlings ensured that the contest remained in the balance until the final pairings had completed.
Stan Eagles Trophy
THE rules for the annual Stan Eagles Trophy, re-named after the former ‘father of the section’ who played regularly up to the age of 91, require handicaps to be adjusted for age.
Any player below the age of 65 has a deduction of one shot per year, while any player over 75 receives an extra shot for each year.
It came as no great surprise to the membership when Bob Leggott, receiving 10 additional strokes, triumphed yet again with a net 67, although Andy Hughes, with no handicap adjustment, was pipped for the title only on countback.
Minchinhampton New Course Seniors Open
THE individual performance of the week, however, came from South Cerney senior Keith Hughes who scored 37 points in the Seniors Open at Minchinhampton New Course, finishing seventh overall and first in the over-70s category.
