Defence Academy 4.5 South Cerney 1.5

SOUTH Cerney’s indifferent away form continued at Shrivenham last week where they suffered a comprehensive defeat against a Defence Academy team, who themselves had suffered a 5-1 defeat in the reverse fixture back in May.

South Cerney’s only victory came when Pete Chart and David Taylor beat Andy Cathcart and Keith Price 4&3, while Walter Sutherland and Danny McDougall, on one of his rare outings for the team, managed to halve their match against Bruce Warr and Phil Spracklen.

However, these two matches could not rescue South Cerney who by then had already contrived to lose the first four games: the experienced opening pair of Captain Dave Mitchell and Chairman Colin Bulley lost 4&3 to David Jenkins and Richard Self; Andy Taylor and Frankie Shaw lost 3&2 to Derek Bray and Graham Vizor; John Abbott and new member Matthew Smith lost 3&2 to Phil Everitt and Dave Gosling; whilst John Carrington and Cameron Thomson were trounced 7&6 by Rodger Hood and Tom Richardson.

August Medal THE Seniors’ August Medal was played in benign conditions on a South Cerney course which had responded well to the recent rain, none of which explains the relatively high scores, with not a single player breaking par.

Closest to that achievement was Brian Whittaker who won Division One with a net 70, playing off nine, followed home by Pete Chart with a net 72 playing off seven, and John Hayward with a net 74 playing off 18.

In Division Two, the ever-consistent Steve Kaufmann (see photo) with a net 72 off 20, pipped Phil Stansfield with the same net score on countback.

Chris Huckle with a net 74 and playing off 21 filled the minor place.
