SGB Premiership
Swindon Robins 52
Leicester Lions 40

THE Swindon Robins' 10th successive win saw the team move to the top of the SGB Premiership and sent historians poring over dusty documents to see whether Swindon had ever had such a winning streak in their 68-year history.

But it was never an easy win as basement side Leicester, buoyed by some smart guest bookings, took the lead in the second race and then in heat 12 pulled level after being 10 points down.

Despite being without Jason Doyle, Swindon then pulled off three successive 5-1 wins to take the match 52-40. The score in the end perhaps flattered the home side.

Missing the injured Zach Wajtknecht, the Robins looked weak at reserve and it looks as if manager Alun Rossiter will be booking in guest number sevens for the rest of the season, as we have passed speedway’s cut-off date for new signings.

Unfortunately Simon Lambert failed to score but did lend his machine to the impressive Chris Harris (cover for Doyle) guest who was part of two of the last three maximum-heat wins and his paid 14 points made him equal top scorer with David Bellego.

Nick Morris weighed in with nine points but was on the wrong end of a heat 11 5-1 as Erik Riss and Scott Nicholls surprisingly led home the Australian and Adam Ellis to make it 35-33 to the Robins.

In the next race Rohan Tungate, a very astutely chosen number six for the Lions, took the win from the energetic Bradley Wilson-Dean with fellow reserve Joss Bates third and Ellis taking a second successive last place.

However Ellis redeemed himself in race 14 as he flew past Tungate and Bates to follow Bellego home to secure the victory.

Pole Tobiasz Musielak again proved what a great signing he has been with a paid nine including a win in heat eight as Leicester put in Riss for a tactical ride that could only provide second-place points.

Swindon boss Rossiter said: “It looked like it was going to go against us at one stage – we were comfortable, but then they came back and made it tough.

"We had a bit of a get-together which seemed to rejuvenate everybody, and a big thanks to Simon Lambert who lent Chris Harris his bike for his last two rides.

"Every time Chris rides for me, he never lets me down.

"Ten wins out of ten is a fantastic run, and we’ve got to be happy with it – but we’re not getting carried away. You’ve got to keep your feet firmly on the ground, but we are top of the league and into the semi-finals of the Knockout Cup (against Belle Vue), so we’re in a good place right now.”

Compared to the previous week’s shenanigans, there were no Robins tape offences with referee Christina Turnbull’s consistent approach to the starting button certainly pleasing the vociferous and enthusiastic crowd.
