A 26-YEAR-OLD Cirencester man will stand trial accused of causing the death of pensioner William Day by careless driving while over the drink-drive limit.

Cheltenham Magistrates' Court was today told that Shane Davis, of Fosse Close in Cirencester, intends to plead not guilty to the charge.

Mr Davis was told he is charged with causing the death of Mr Day, 82, by driving a Peugeot car without due care and attention on November 14 last year at Cotswold Airport on the A429.

The charge alleges he had an alcohol reading of 144mg in his blood at the time of the fatal collision with Mr Day's Suzuki Ignis. The legal limit is 80mgs.

The case was sent to Gloucester Crown Court, where the first hearing will be on August 25.

Mr Davis was given unconditional bail until that date. His solicitor Helen Smith gave an indication of a not guilty plea.

Mr Day, of Cirencester, was pronounced dead at the scene of the head-on car collision.

His 76-year-old female passenger died nine days later, though Davis has not been charged in relation to her death.
