Brickhampton 3½
South Cerney 2½

AT THE beginning of another busy week in the seniors’ calendar, South Cerney travelled to Brickhampton where the noise of the planes taking off and landing at the adjacent Staverton Airfield could not detract from the pristine fairways and challenging greens.

Unfortunately the greens may have been just a bit too challenging for the away team as they went down by 3½ to 2½ despite four matches being decided on the 18th green.

For South Cerney, Dave Mitchell & Keith Hughes, Brian Whittaker & Phil Stansfield, and Colin Bulley & Andy Taylor all halved their matches, while Nigel Rawlings & John Quick, and Walter Sutherland & Colin Hawkins lost 3&2.

The only winning combination was the pairing of Pete Chart & Chris Huckle who claimed a 2up victory on the 18th.

South Cerney 2½

ON THE following day, the seniors were on the road again, this time to Minchinhampton Common where golfers, hikers and cattle have found a way to co-exist in harmony through the summer months.

Despite the new surroundings, the match outcome was identical to the previous day’s match at Brickhampton.

Ian Haslam playing with John Quick and Colin Bulley with Ken Jacobs secured 2&1 and 4&2 victories respectively.

Phil Stansfield and John Carrington halved the opening match, but defeats for Walter Sutherland & Frankie Shaw by 5&3, and Alan Martin & Colin Hawkins by 3&2 consigned South Cerney to a second away defeat in as many days.

Wiltshire v Gloucestershire

THIS year’s seniors' captain Dave Mitchell (from Wiltshire) challenged his vice captain Chris Huckle (from Gloucestershire) to an inaugural inter-county team stableford competition.

Each team fielded 17 players, and the points scores of all 17 players were totalled to arrive at a team score. Bragging rights for the rest of this year rest with Wiltshire as they triumphed by 554 to 541 – according to the captain who took sole charge of the cards after the event.
