JASON DOYLE made another GP final on Saturday, and moved into second place in the overall standings after three rounds, despite suffering with bike trouble.

Freddie Lindgren came to the meeting in front and would have been strongly fancied to extend his lead at the Latvian track of Daugavpils where he rode during the 2015 and 2016 seasons. But he injured his leg in Wolverhampton’s narrow win over the Swindon Robins the previous Monday and was clearly in pain.

Doyle needed a win in his final qualifying ride to move into the semi-finals. In heat 10 he had been in a point-scoring position when his bike misbehaved and he was forced to pull up.

His semi-final saw him on the outside gate against Patryk Dudek, Emil Sayfutdinov and Matej Zagar and Doyle had to twice come past the talented Russian to join winner Dudek in the final.

Up against Dudek, Piotr Pawlicki and former Robin Maciej Janowski was always going to be a tough ask, especially as Doyle had drawn the tricky third gate.

Doyle charged through into second place on lap two before his bike again failed him leaving the Poles with a clean sweep.

Lindgren’s injury-affected five points means he is now joint-second with Doyle on 37 points in the world championship standings behind new leader Dudek.

The dusty and dry track did not make for great racing on a hot night and being caught on the outside rarely gave any drive. Such conditions did not help the real racers such as Doyle and Britain's Tai Woffinden.

The next round is in Prague – where Doyle won in 2016 – on June 10.
