CANDIDATES standing in the North Wiltshire constituency have been giving their reaction to the appalling attack in Manchester last night.

22 people, including children, were killed and 59 people were injured in the blast which took place at the Manchester Arena shortly after 10.30pm yesterday.

Police investigating the incident have confirmed the explosion was caused by a lone suicide bomber who targeted people leaving a concert by US singer Ariana Grande.

Former North Wiltshire MP James Gray, who is standing for the Conservative Party, said: “Following last night’s appalling attack in Manchester, I have suspended my campaign in North Wiltshire.

“I’m devastated by the appalling news. That such a tragedy could occur at all at pop concert attended by children is beyond disgraceful, it really is just devastating and it’s hard to find the words.

“My thoughts and sympathies are with the victims and their families.”

Brian Mathew, the Liberal Democrat candidate, posted on his Facebook page: “A time to stand together.

"My thoughts are with the people of Manchester.”

Lisa Tweedie, who is standing as an independent, said: “I’ve got family in Manchester and a teenage daughter who attends concerts so it’s made me feel quite shaken. It affects us all.

"I’m devastated at the attacks but will not be suspending campaign as I firmly believe if we change our actions after these attacks then it’s as if they have won.

"I was up at 5am for a meeting with Swindon and Wiltshire local enterprise partnerships and it’s been cancelled which I think is a shame because we won’t have a chance to have that meeting now.”

Peter Baldrey, Labour candidate, said: "My heart goes out to the victims and relatives of the terrorist outrage in Manchester.

"The attack was cowardly and absolutely disgraceful. I am particularly horrified that the terrorist targeted a venue where many young people were present.

"I would like to pay tribute to the emergency services and the people of Manchester who rallied around those caught up in the attack.

"Terrorism is evil. Terrorism will not win. Our way of life and commitment to freedom and liberty will not be crushed."

Philip Chamberlain, Green Party candidate, said: ""Such terrible news from Manchester and our thoughts are with the victims and their friends and family.

"It is also important to pay tribute to the work of our emergency services as well as the many citizens who have stepped forward to help."
