CALLS for a notorious Cirencester roundabout to be made safer have been voiced after a mother and daughter were hospitalised following a collision.

The pair were taken to A&E after their car collided with another vehicle on the Midland Road roundabout near Love Lane Industrial Estate, causing traffic delays on surrounding roads.

After the incident at lunchtime on Wednesday (April 12) several Standard readers raised their concerns about the safety of the roundabout, just down from Lidl.

Writing on Facebook, Gemma Lawson said: "That roundabout is a nightmare.

"Motorists come off of the fire station roundabout with their indicators still going left, and then go straight across.

"Had a couple of close shaves myself," she added.

Commenting on the Standard website, another reader agreed: "Cars come off the main roundabout far too fast.

"If you are pulling out of Bridge Road onto the mini roundabout you take your life in your hands every time."

The reader suggested a police officer be installed with a speed camera "just to show people how quickly they are entering Midland Road from the dual carriageway".

The black Honda Jazz the mum and daughter were travelling in suffered damage to its front passenger-side wheel and chassis, and the passenger airbag was deployed on impact.

The car was also subsequently left stranded on the roundabout before a passing recovery vehicle dragged it onto the pavement to allow traffic to ease.

Several police officers had been called to the scene.

Speaking at the roadside, the husband of the younger of the women said he had been called at 12.45pm by his wife following the accident.

He said both women had been taken to A&E and he believed his mother-in-law has dislocated her thumb.

“They both had a bit of whiplash,” he said, adding that “the car was stuck in the middle” of the roundabout following the crash.

“A kind passing recovery lorry just dragged it out of the way.”

The man was waiting at the roadside for the car to be taken away.

He said his mother-in-law was visiting her daughter in Cirencester from Somerset, and they had been taking their dog to the vet prior to the collision.

Traffic on Bridge Road and Midland Road had been at a standstill following the incident, though by 1.50pm had returned to normal, with police leaving the scene around 2pm.

A police spokeswoman later confirmed the drivers involved in the collision exchanged details at the scene.
