ENGLAND rugby star Jonathan Webb came to Lechlade on Saturday to reopen the restored Pavilion building following the arson attack last year.

Mr Webb gave a lively and inspirational talk, before answering lots of questions and meeting fans.

The Oak Street building suffered an arson attack last June, in which the office was largely destroyed.

Having played for the England national team from 1987 to 1993, reaching the 1991 World Cup Final and winning two Five Nations grand slam titles, the former full-back retired in 1993.

Simon Paul, chair of trustees, speaking before the event, said: "To borrow an Olympic games expression, we are keen to inspire the next generation, so would like to involve as many young people as possible in this event, particularly those who have an interest in rugby.

"We want to use this occasion to showcase what a good community facility the pavilion provides.

"It is also a tangible example of us turning the terrible arson attacks on the Memorial Hall and Pavilion into an opportunity to provide better facilities for our community."
