A CYCLIST from Malmesbury will be attempting to ride three of the Welsh peaks in less than a day, for a charity close to his family.

Starting at Snowdon on April 30, before heading to Cadair Idris and finishing at Pen y Fan, Rob Needham will cover a total of 18 miles, climbing 2,900m over the 24-hour challenge.

The 35-year-old has been mountain biking for five years, after suffering a serious injury that stopped him playing football.

In the past couple of years he has taken his riding to the next level, competing in regional downhill and endurance racing, but Rob’s next challenge has pushed him to go the extra mile in training.

“I’m currently in the gym three or four times a week, then heading off up the hills at the weekend,” said Rob.

“We’re lucky to have the Brecon beacons less than two hours away.

“I have been climbing mountains with my bike whenever possible, but it’s slightly tricky with my race commitments.”

It is not just the physical part of the challenge that Rob is preparing for however.

Much of his ride up Pen y Fan and Snowdon will be in the dead of night, so he has had to install powerful lights on his bike, as well as stocking up on high energy food for the gruelling climbs.

Rob is taking part in the challenge in an effort to raise money for the Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA).

His daughter was diagnosed with a bilateral cleft lip and palate and he says CLAPA became a “huge support” for his family.

“Now, having gone through three major operations in under two years and many more to come, and with the support of CLAPA throughout, I would like to give something back,” said Rob.

“Initially it was the support before she was born, finding out information on cleft and what that might entail.

“Once Faye was born, she would really struggle to feed, taking three hours to drink as little at 20ml of milk.

“CLAPA supported us finding the correct feeding bottles and formula for her to put on weight.

“Faye has other complications including deafness, lack of balance and a genetic disorder. CLAPA have put us in touch with other parents to share our stories and tips.

“CLAPA are there for advice and networking, providing expertise if needed.”
