A GROUP of residents in Cirencester will be targeting the worst litter eyesores in Cirencester.

The small group, led by Roger Sweeting, of North Home Road in Cirencester, will be clearing several sites during the Keep Britain Tidy Spring Clean Weekend from March 3 to 5.

He said: "My neighbour Doug Emmott and myself were fed up with seeing a lot of litter discarded along the routes we take when walking into Cirencester from the Beeches Estate.

"We decided to do something about it and so since Christmas about every 14 days we ‘litter pick’ on a circuit which includes: City Bank, City Bank Grove, the access tracks to City Bank and the footpaths connecting City Bank to North Home and Queen Elizabeth Roads.

"We have found that after the first pick the amount of litter discarded was much reduced, it seems that litter does attract litter!

"We would hope that our example could strike a chord with other Cirencester residents and if anyone would like to do something similar I would be happy to record their location and try and put them in touch with like minded residents in their locality."

Roger, with help from Cirencester Town Council, recently litter picked along the old railway line from Queen Elizabeth Road up to Kingshill School.

Local businesses McDonald's and Tesco have offered to support any scheduled litter clearing event in their area.

Roger's group is also holding discussions with The Baptist Church and Tesco about informal litter picking around their buildings.
