PUPILS in Wiltshire’s secondary schools continue to perform well, according to new government statistics.

Two-thirds of Wiltshire students achieved A*-C in both English and maths GCSEs, above the national figure of nationally the figure of 59 per cent.

There has also been high achievement in the English Baccalaureate, which measures the proportion of pupils awarded an A*-C in core academic subjects including maths, English, science, a language, and history or geography.

More than a quarter of all Wiltshire students achieved this high threshold compared to 23 per cent nationally.

The government introduced new measures this year taking into account a wider range of results than before, focussing on both exam results and progress across a number of subjects.

Attainment 8 measures the attainment of pupils in eight GCSEs include English and maths.

Wiltshire students’ Attainment 8 figure was 51.4 per cent, again beating the national standard of 48.5 per cent.

Wiltshire sixth form pupils also maintained high levels of achievements in their A-levels.

More than 20 per cent achieved A-level grades of AAB or better and more than 10 per cent of all students achieve three or more As in their exams.

More than 16 per cent of students gained AAB or higher grades in at least two facilitating subjects, including maths, English, sciences and languages, which help students compete for top university places.

The good results come as Ofsted’s recent annual report stated 99 per cent of all Wiltshire secondary school pupils are in good and outstanding schools.

Laura Mayes, cabinet member for children’s services at Wiltshire Council said: “Many congratulations to Wiltshire’s hard working pupils and to the schools which provide the stimulating academic environment which helps our young people achieve their potential.

“The Ofsted annual report states Wiltshire students are learning in good or outstanding schools which these excellent results confirm.”
