A SERIAL Cirencester shoplifter who lined his shopping bag with aluminium foil to thwart security devices has been jailed.

Christopher Baker, 40, pleaded guilty at Cheltenham Magistrates Court to a string of shoplifting charges.

When the JPs heard that Baker was a "prolific offender" they jailed him for 26 weeks.

On July 19 and June 15 he stole food from Waitrose in Cirencester; on August 31 he stole food from Tesco Express in Chesterton Lane, Cirencester; on October 17 he took DVDs from Tesco in Cirencester; he stole steak and chicken from Marks and Spencer and also went equipped for stealing by going into shops with his shopping bag lined with foil.

Baker also admitted failing to surrender to the custody of the court.

Some of the shoplifting offences were committed when he was subject to a suspended prison sentence imposed for stealing.
