COTSWOLD MP Geoffrey Clifton-Brown has pressed for greater connectivity between the South West and Heathrow, following the Government’s decision to expand the airport.
The plans to add a third runway at the west London airport were announced yesterday following a cabinet committee meeting.
Mr Clifton-Brown, who voiced his support for the expansion, said: “The key point I was pressing the Secretary of State on following his announcement was that if we are to meet the emission targets for London Heathrow we will need to improve railway connectivity.”
“In particular, we must ensure that the Western Rail Link to Heathrow from Reading is built well before the third runway is completed.
“With this and the ongoing electrification of the West Coast Main Line, the journey from Gloucestershire to Heathrow will be much quicker.”
A spokesman for the MP added: “Over 5.5 million live in South West England and connectivity must be at the fore of the Government’s planning.
“Any decision to expand Heathrow must be met with the commensurate decision to improve the transport links that it is fed by and reduce congestion.
“With a wealth of important businesses spanning a range of sectors it is economically imperative that the region does not miss out.”
