THE Cotswolds has one of the fewest number of fast food outlets in the South West, making it likely that fewer people are consuming takeaway food.

There are 3,932 fast food venues in the South West, but just about one per cent (41) of these are based in Cotswolds, figures by Public Health England revealed.

The district ranks 28 (bottom ninth) out of 36 local authorities for its number of takeaways.

But when looking at the density of fast food places per 100,000 of the population, the Cotswolds ranks even lower at the bottom fourth (34th).

There are 48.4 fast food outlets per 100,000 of the population in the Cotswolds.

In Stroud, there are a higher number fast food outlets (64), with the density of these being 55.6.

In Wiltshire, there are 294 fast food places and in Swindon, there are 133. Both have a density figure of just more than 60..

Some of the Cotswolds’ most ‘unhealthy’ neighbours include Cheltenham and Gloucester.

There are 95 fast food places in Cheltenham, but the density of these places is relatively high at 81.5.

In Gloucester, there are 133 fast food places, similar to Swindon, but their density reaches a whopping 105.9 (fourth highest in the South West).

Professor Debra Lapthorne, centre director for Public Health England South West said: “These foods, which are high in salt, fat and sugar, should only be eaten in moderation and as part of a healthy diet.

“All councils in the South West have plans to tackle childhood obesity and are putting these into action. But we need to do more and faster."
