CAMILLA, the Duchess of Cornwall, honoured one of Cricklade’s most renowned figures from the past.
She visited Swindon rail station on Thursday to unveil a commemorative plaque for Sir Daniel Gooch.
He was a former chairman of Great Western Railway (GWR) and MP for Cricklade in the 19th century, and the Duchess – who lives at Highgrove near Tetbury – gave her seal of approval to the newly-created Sir Daniel Gooch Place at Swindon station.
Sir Daniel was a pioneering rail engineer and the first GWR superintendent of locomotive engines.
He served as Conservative MP for 20 years, from 1865 to 1885, when Cricklade ceased to be a constituency.
Her Royal Highness’ unveiling of the plaque right outside Swindon station also marked the town’s 175th anniversary.
Pupils from Robert Le Kyng Primary School were in attendance, with Alice MacNaughton and Jayden Blair, both seven years old, presenting Camilla with flowers.
