MOTORISTS have said enough is enough, after another lorry got wedged under the King’s Way bridge in Corston last week.

For the second time in two months motorists and rail users suffered delays at the hand of an HGV driver who misjudged the height of the problem bridge.

Commuters who use the well-used A429 route from Malmesbury to Chippenham and beyond are now calling on the authorities to do something about the recurring problem.

Wiltshire Council member Simon Killane, recently raised the issue at a Community Area Transport Group (CATG) meeting.

He said: “Any crash of any kind always warrants a second look, as there is always a threat to life or limb.

“The highways officer has been looking at options. The problem for us is it’s linked with the rail company.

“We can do things like put up extra signage, but with that bridge I think it requires something more serious.

“What I’m going to do is talk to one of the key highways officers and cabinet member and ask what it is the council can do to try and influence the rail people on ways to improve this.

“If we could get to point where we get the rail people and council to sit down together, it would be interesting to see what can be done.

“There’s always opportunities. I saw a brilliant scheme where they spray a mist when driver comes within certain distance, then project a warning that says ‘low bridge ahead’.”

Katherine Gore, 18, lives near the bridge. She says something needs to be done.

“I live on the back road that takes the hefty flow of traffic from the A429, so I always know when there is an issue with King’s Way,” she said.

“Maybe some bars that hang out from the bridge, so they hit the bars first before the bridge, or sensors that are further back so lorries can turn off before they get to the bridge.

“The lorry sign outside Stanton garage doesn't work due to a car accident that took it partially out, so it doesn't work from the Chippenham side.

“They need to fix it urgently as it's only being held up by one post.”

The incident last week resulted in the driver of the lorry receiving a fixed penalty notice.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: “Wiltshire Police received a call shortly before 7.30am to a report of a lorry stuck under the King’s Way bridge on the A429 at Corston.

“Officers attended to assist with traffic issues because the road was partially blocked.

“Network Rail also attended to check the structure of the bridge and reported that it had not been damaged.

“The vehicle was removed and the road completely clear by 8.50am.

“The driver of the HGV, a 37-year-old man from Leicester, was issued with a fixed penalty notice for driving an oversized vehicle under a restricted height bridge.”

Network Rail and Wiltshire Council were contacted for a comment but have yet to provide one.
