A VACANCY for a new Cirencester town councillor will soon be open for those interested in having their say in the town.

The position of councillor for St Michael's ward has been vacant ever since Cllr Joe Harris resigned from Cirencester Town Council on September 1.

The vacancy had been advertised through Cotswold District Council, providing the public with an opportunity to call for an election, but as no election was called, the town council will now proceed with co-option.

Candidates will be asked to explain why they want the position, how they meet the brief and whether they are eligible.

The brief states that essential characteristics are a sound knowledge and understanding of local affairs, good interpersonal skills, good reading and analytic skills, an ability to work under pressure, an ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing, and enthusiasm.

They should be able and willing to represent the council and their community, work closely with other members and the council's partners, and attend meetings of the council or meetings of other local bodies in the evening and at weekends.

To be eligible for the position, you must be aged 18 or older, and a British citizen or a citizen of the Commonwealth or the European Union.

You must also either:

  • have been an elector of the town or occupied or owned/rented premises in the town for the last 12 months
  • or have worked or lived in the town for the last 12 months
  • or have lived within three miles of the town or community in the last 12 months.

Further details will be provided on how to apply to become a town councillor.
