PUPILS from a school in Fairford have been removed by Gloucestershire County Council (GCC) due to “safety concerns”.

All 35 children at Coln House, a special school for pupils with learning and behavioural problems aged between 9 and 16, have been removed.

Cllr Paul McLain, GCC cabinet member for children and young people, said: “Our absolute priority is the safety and wellbeing of the children in our county.

“Due to some safety concerns, we have taken the decision to remove all pupils from Coln House School at the current time.

“We are working to find placements for the children affected, to minimise the amount of disruption to them and their families.”

A spokesman for GCC added that the school had an OFSTED inspection in May and the report will be published later this week.

Concerns had been raised in an OFSTED report in January, regarding effectiveness of management at the school following the appointment of a new head teacher in September 2015, as well as ‘weaknesses in the qualifications of staff’.

However, the report also stated: “A detailed improvement plan is in place to support and strengthen the additional changes that are required.”
