  • A LARGE number of people were present in All Hallows Church last Sunday morning when our vicar, Rev Canon David Bowers, held his last service before leaving South Cerney to take up a new living at Chipping Sodbury. After the service many went on to a lunch time picnic in the grounds of Atkyns Manor.
  • GIGACLEAR, a firm which supplies fibre optic broadband connections, is holding a question and answer session in the village hall on Tuesday, July 12 from 7.30pm to 9.30pm to measure the demand for a faster service in this area. Anyone interested can attend on the night.
  • THE South Cerney 101st Annual Flower Show is a month away and now is the time to consider what you will enter. Full details of all the classes are listed in the schedule which is available in the post office in Clarks Hay. Apart from the usual flowers and vegetables there are many classes in the cookery and handicraft sections for everyone to have a go at, and that includes men. To help newcomers there are some recipes printed in the schedule. Children of all ages have several classes to enter.
  • THE steering group for the new community building being constructed on the Redrow site held its second meeting recently and good progress is being made towards setting up a group to run the facility. The new building is scheduled to open in November of this year.
  • LAST weekend three separate birthday parties were held in the village hall. The hall can be booked for celebrating birthdays for children up to the age of 12. There is a set fee of £35 for four hours sessions either from 9am to 1pm or 2pm to  6pm on a Saturday or a Sunday. There is plenty of room for a bouncy castle. For more details and to book the hall, please contact me.
  • DUE to mindless vandalism at the Upper Up children’s play area, glass bottles were smashed around the play equipment. Although Moira and Tom Scanlon cleared the site users are asked to take extra care while using the area. If anyone knows who was responsible, please contact Robert Cowley the clerk to the Parish Council 07983 202015.
  • LARGE lorries are still driving through the village centre despite warning signs saying there is a weight limit. If you want to stop this happening and you see anyone flouting the weight limit, record the details of the registration number, date, time, location and the direction in which the wagon was travelling. If you can also photograph the offending vehicle, that will help. Pass this on to Robert Cowley either on 07983 202015 or clerk@southcerney.org.uk.

  • A FAMILY service takes place at St. Peter’s Church on Sunday, July 3, starting at 10am. Refreshments will be available after the service.
  • SIDDINGTON school is holding a sports day for pupils on Tuesday, July 5, starting at 11am. Parents and friends are invited to watch the events. Bring along a picnic to enjoy in the school grounds, weather permitting.
  • GOOD progress is being made on the new Siddington Road estate and it’s anticipated that construction will be completed by the end of November. As part of the project, Bloors has undertaken the task of building a new bus shelter, as the existing bus shelter must be demolished to make way for the continuation of the pavement to the estate entrance. Work on the new shelter, which will be rotated so that the entrance faces the road, will begin as soon as the gas pipe work currently taking place along Siddington Road is complete. At the same time the small tree that overhangs the existing bus shelter will be removed, although it must first be inspected to ensure that there are no nesting birds.
