MINETY Primary School took part in a 24-hour cycle rice to raise money for their school

The school's under 11s team took part in the Crudwell 24-hour Bike Ride, which ran from midday on Saturday, June 18 to midday on Sunday, June 19.

Teams were encouraged to complete as many seven-mile laps as possible in 24 hours.

Ten pupils took part in the race: Marcus Woodhouse, 8; Harry Morrison, 8; Matthew Francis, 8; Romey Smogur, 6; Alex Smogur, 4; Aden Vaughan, 11; Ellie Gilpin, 11; Tony Gilpin, 7; James Ashley, 7; and Patrick Griffin, 10.

The team rode from Saturday at midday to 11.30pm and from 7am on Sunday until the end of the event on midday.

They completed 140 miles between them, with the youngest members of four and five years completing two laps (14 miles) and the older children completing five laps (35 miles).

Lilia Woodhouse, a parent, said: "I was worried that the older kids might not be able to make the full seven-mile lap and had contingency plans in place for the youngest members.

"However the whole team did amazingly well. I was blown away by their enthusiasm, commitment and team spirit.

"As a mark of the team spirit they all decided to do the last lap together even though they could only get one lap point.

"It was a great couple of days both for the parents and kids.

"The kids were all on a high after the event and you could see them grow in confidence with every lap and I am sure that this will help them overcome challenges in the future.

"The kids are excited to do it again next year and want to ride through the night if they can, but let's see."

The children aimed to raise £200, and so far, they have raised £310 with donations still coming in.

The Crudwell 24-hour Bike Ride started more than 20 years ago to help fundraise for a new village hall.

The event was so successful that the village decided to continue the event even after they had raised enough money. Over the years, they have raised in excess of £230,000 from the race.

The village are now looking towards the refurbishment and extension of the hall.
