RESIDENTS in Wiltshire are being urged to be extra vigilant for the aggressive Japanese Knotweed which has had perfect conditions to thrive this spring.

The weed is capable of destroying tarmac, concrete and property foundations.

Wiltshire expert and business owner of Wiltshire Knotweed, John Bailey, has seen advanced growth in the area.

He said: “I have noticed this year that the weather has been exceptionally mild in the West Country.

“This has definitely helped contribute to knotweed growth.

“In any situation where knotweed is suspected it is strongly advised to seek professional help from a recognised contractor in the industry.”

Simply having the weed on a property can cause a loss in market value and has been known to result in the refusal of mortgages.

As a stubborn weed, it can take extreme measures to remove over several months.

In July 2015 the Property Care Association (PCA trade body) announced tougher regulations.

As of this spring chief executive Steve Hodgson stated, “We’ve had reports from our members of the plant taking hold earlier than usual.

“Its effective eradication is a job for the experts, so it’s vitally important for anyone who thinks they might have an issue to seek advice.”

If you suspect you have Japanese Knotweed on your property, it’s best not to touch the plant and instead contact a professional.
