AN investigation is underway into illegal commercial dumping at a recycling site in Malmesbury.

Frustrated residents in Malmesbury have been complaining for some time about recycling bins overflowing adjacent to Station Road Car Park – the primary car park used by visitors to the town.

Wiltshire Council are now investigating the issue, saying that they are looking into firms that could illegally dumping commercial waste at the recycling bins, that are meant for use by the public.

Malmesbury resident Stephen Gaulter says overflowing recycling bins are not an uncommon at the site.

“I stressed to the council that it probably needs emptying on a more regular basis,” he said.

“I have seen it in this state on more than one occasion in the past.

“I feel that either it needs emptying on a more regular basis, alternatively, why not simply monitor the glass, can and paper banks regularly.

“If they are getting full before their scheduled date for emptying, then bring that date forward.”

The issue was raised by Wiltshire Council member Simon Killane at the recent northern area board meeting.

Following the meeting he said: “The council are following up and trying to identify the vehicle that is allegedly leaving things there.

“The emptying is not frequent enough, which the council have said they will look at it.

“I asserted it’s also about identifying peak times like after Christmas when there are lots more bottles from people celebrating events.”

Wiltshire Council are responsible for the collection of such waste and recycling.

A spokesperson for the council said: “Our waste contractor has already agreed to increase the number of visits to the site to empty the recycling containers more frequently following concerns.

“However our enforcement teams are also following up potential misuse by businesses disposing of their glass in the recycling containers instead of arranging for their own commercial waste and recycling disposal.

“There have also been instances where bags of recycling have been left at the side of half empty bins so we’d encourage people who make the effort to bring their recycling, to dispose of it properly in the bins.

“Residents can also request an additional black box for their recyclable waste by ordering online at wiltshire.gov.uk/new-replacement-bins or by calling 0300 456 0102.”
