Powell's School visits Bingham Library

As part of World Book Day, Powell's Primary School treated students to a visit to the local library. There will also be visits from children's authors Steve Antony and Christopher Edge, who will run a writing workshop for the children.

Joseph Barron, 7, came as King Arthur, who he thought was "cool" as "he fights" and became king when he pulled the sword out of the stone.

Star Wars fan Leo Hart, 7, came as Luke Skywalker. He said: "I like Star Wars because I like the Force and the weapons."

William Wrigley, 7, dressed up as the BFG from the Roald Dahl book. He said: "The BFG is funny, kind and so powerful. He can make the bubbles go down and when he drinks fizzy drinks, he farts."

Martha Alayon, 7, was dressed up as Cinderella before she married the prince. "She's really pretty. I've watched the film with the real Cinderella," she said referring to the recent 2015 film.

Millie Urquhart, 6, however, had a liking for "bad people" as she dressed up as Mrs Trenchbull from Roald Dahl's Matilda. "I thought I'd look really funny and fat," she said patting her stomach bulge.

Molly Flanagan, 7, dressed up as Alice from Alice in Wonderland. She said of her favourite character: "She gets into a lot of trouble and she's always a bit of a strop."

The children learned to use the library. They learned that the library is free to use and about taking care of books."

Rendcomb College dressed up for a Where's Wally surpise

Pupils and teachers at Rendcomb College also dressed up today as their favourite book character to celebrate World Book Day.

Staff in the junior school, however, surprised students as they turned up in Where's Wally and Where's Wenda costumes.

Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard:

Head of Juniors at Rendcomb College, Victoria Beevers, said: “Our Rendcomb readers have all dressed up and the staff surprise has been fantastic! I am looking forward to our World Book Day poetry performances this afternoon and today’s lessons will involve all sorts of activities to encourage reading.

Head boy Sam Tushingham, dressed as Gandalf, and head girl Kate Major, dressed as one of the minions.

“Buddy reading is a key part of our curriculum and the older children love taking the opportunity to read with the younger pupils. Reading skills are the basis for so much of a child’s learning, particularly language acquisition, and talking about books, comprehending what is going on in non-fiction or fiction is an essential skill.”

The college's senior school library is also holding a Library Trail Quiz with book token prizes for winners.
