OFFICERS rescued a dog who was running the wrong way down the M5.

Road police put out a call for drivers to be wary as the collie travelled north along the southbound carriageway near to junction 12 just after 4pm.

The officers managed to catch the dog, putting him on a lead as traffic slowed to a halt.

Traffic is still heavy on the motorway but police said the dog is safe and on its way to the vets.

According to road police, he collie said: ""Err, the vets please driver. Oh and please pass on my apologies to the nice people on that road thingy."
