A LARGE pothole on the A429 has badly damaged at least eight cars.

Police have warned commuters to be wary today as Storm Imogen continues to roll across the Cotswolds, leaving downed trees and minor floods in its wake.

Officers were called to the A429 near Kemble this morning after a large pothole appeared.

A driver first reported damage at around 1am but at least eight more cars have been crippled by the pothole since - though sources indicate it could be even more.

Commuters should driver with “due care” on Gloucestershire roads that have taken a beating from rain and wind over the past 24 hours, police warned.

In Backwalls, Stow-on-the-Wold, the storm left the side of a home in tatters. The road is still closed.

Downed trees littered the rural district but most have now been cleared.

An extreme weather warning was put in place by the Met Office at 10am on Sunday for the ninth named storm in three months, with warnings that some gusts could reach 70mph in parts of the South West.

The yellow warning for rain and amber warning for wind will stay in force until 6pm today.

The Met Office chief forecaster said: “A deep area of low pressure will sweep a band of frontal rain quickly eastwards later on Sunday. Following this, a very unstable westerly flow will bring frequent heavy showers on Sunday night and through much of Monday.

“Over a 24 hour period, rainfall accumulations of 15 to 25 mm are likely quite widely, with over 40 mm across the high ground of Wales and the moors of South West England. Given saturated conditions due to recent rainfall, there is potential for some surface water flooding, which will combine with very strong winds to lead to difficult driving conditions.

“There remains some uncertainty in northward and eastward extent of the damaging winds as well as the peak strengths and so this warning will be kept under review.”
