MYSTERY surrounds the placement of fake signs on a Cirencester bridge .

Earlier this month the signs which carry the Gloucestershire County Council logo appeared on the bridge over the bypass on Bristol Road.

But the county council said that it did not install the signs, which advise that work will be carried out on the bridge until March and that motorist who park there will be towed.

Scott Tompkins, lead commissioner for highways at Gloucestershire County Council said: “We haven’t placed these signs on the bridge in Sheep Street, and we’re arranged for them to be removed today.

“Drivers are reminded to park responsibly, making sure they aren’t causing any potential difficulties for other drivers, pedestrians or other road users.”

For the past few months, vehicles parked on the bridge, which has no parking restrictions, have angered pedestrians and motorist, who say they are putting people in danger.

Several pedestrians have nearly been hit by cars when crossing the road on the bridge because the parked vehicles are stopping them from seeing oncoming vehicles.

Despite the placement of the signs, drivers have continued to park on the bridge.

Cirencester Town Council Councillor, Jenny Hincks, who has been campaigning to get car parking restrictions on the bridge, said she was confused by the news that the county council  did not place the signs and disappointed that they were not official.

Cllr Hincks said: “ I am disappointed that cars will be continuing to park there because the signs are wrong.”
