WORK is about to start on completing the reinstatement of a canal which has fallen into disrepair near Stroud.
The county council is set to start the repair work of Bowbridge Lock in January.
Bowbridge Bridge crosses the Thames and Severn Canal at the foot of Stroud’s Butterow Hill.
The work is part of the ongoing Stroudwater Navigation and Thames and Severn Canal restoration works and will see the existing embankment, which supports one lane of the road, removed and a new bridge will be built which joins the existing arch bridge. This will carry the northern lane of Butterrow Hill.
Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and flood said: “This is really important work which will see the canal put back in at Bowbridge Lock after many years. By reopening the waterways along this stretch we hope to open up the tourism and economic opportunity in the Stroud Valleys.
“I’d like to thank the travelling public for their patience while the improvements are carried out.”
The improvements will start on January 4 with completion expected in June 2016.
