SALE REPORT

Monthly Auction Sale, Saturday 7th November 2015

Royal British Legion Hall, Bourton-on-the-Water

It was noted that Furniture per se had been met with a marked improvement bidding wise at this particular sale and a local private consignment of Bright’s of Nettlebed reproduction oak Furniture was very well received indeed. Several pieces here are worthy of mention including Lot 349 a fine mid 18th Century style oak Dresser at £650. Just a few Lots later a singular Base (without a superstructure) managed £340 and further into the Sale a very stylish pair of Side Cabinets (each with various drawers and panelled cupboard doors in 18th Century style) were taken up enthusiastically by local private Clients at £600.

Lot 114 Sold for £230

Lot 349 Sold for £650 Lot 347 Sold for £460

It seems fitting, not so far from the world famous Cheltenham Racecourse that a thoroughbred found its way into the Sale in the form of a fine quality mid 20th Century carved wood Rocking Horse. The exclusive Toy distinguished itself with dapple grey markings and had at some stage undergone a highly sympathetic restoration process that included new leather saddle, horsehair mane and leather suspension straps for the original stirrups. Some may say that it was a one horse race but this horse galloped home to the tune of £460.

Unsurprisingly enough, the penultimate Sale before Christmas included many fine Jewellery pieces and Lot 114 came in the form of an 18 carat gold solitaire diamond Pendant together with Neck Chain. The gavel finally falling at £230 here. Just a short while later, the same money was tendered for a pair of Earrings set with large amethysts and smaller diamonds.

The Sales held here at Bourton on a monthly basis are classed amongst the most established in the North Cotswolds and quite probably the Country and as such, are known for an eclectic mix of items that are to be found and indeed sometimes characterise most of the Sales. Two such eclectic Lots came in the guise of 19th Century named glass Apothecary Bottles (some with gilt highlights and others distinctively painted etc.) It can be reported that the assortment of Bottles certainly stirred up Bidders and one Letchlade trade Buyer went away feeling much better after having parted with £450 to secure them. Apothecary Bottles collectively sold for £450

Perhaps one of the earliest pieces in the Sale was an early Tang Dynasty Sancai three colour glazed pottery Dish. The Tang Dynasty is generally recognised as being between 618 - 906AD and it follows that this particular Dish had survived in good order for at least 1100 years. Thinking about it, it really did seem remarkable value at just £200.

Lot 56 Sold for £200

Pictures and Paintings had been previously gathered for a specialist offering within this Sale and although sometimes fairly selective an amusing original work of an elongated sheep by renounced Northern Artist Mackenzie Thorpe managed a respectable £250. Other Artworks scored several times around the £100 level and a late 19th Century Oil on Artist’s Board interior scene (in 18th Century style), by E. Rubery took more than one Bidder’s fancy and exceeded pre-Sale expectations at £220.

Lot 247 Sold for £250 Lot 243 Sold for £220 Lot 74 Sold for £220

Yet another “interesting” item was a very large late 19th Century Chinese Tea Canister brightly decorated with gilding, Chinese script and foliate style decoration. At some stage in its life the Canister had been converted into a table lamp (as most of these types of tins are to perhaps improve their commerciality). The added usefulness combined with a striking decorative appeal ensured audience participation bidding wise all the way to £220.

Our last Auction Sale for 2015 will take place at the same Bourton-on-the-Water venue at The Royal British Legion Hall on Saturday 12th December and entries for this particular Sale close on Wednesday 25th November. Unsurprisingly enough this Seasonal Sale boasts festive entries of Fine Wines and Ports, Silverware and a multitude of high end mostly gem set gold and silver Jewellery.
