WAR-weary refugees will find a warm welcome in Cirencester as church-goers rally to support them.

Members of Churches Together in Cirencester are readying themselves to make the five Syrian families feel at home when they come to the district.

Syria has been racked by civil war since spring 2011 when protests erupted against President Bashar al-Assad's government.

Councillors agreed to receive the five refugee families at a CDC cabinet meeting last week.

The 13-church group, led by Matt Frost of Cirencester Baptist Church, has been in contact with Cotswold District Council to find out how they can help when the refugees arrive.

Matt, who is senior pastor at Cirencester Baptist Church, said: “We are interested in offering hospitality to Syrian families who are obviously in desperate need at this particular point and we recognise that hospitality is more than just providing houses where people can live but being supportive when they arrive in the cold and dark where they don’t speak the language.

“We will do whatever we are able to to help.”

They are helping to find houses for the families to live in, items to furnish it and white goods such as fridges and washing machines.

Members of the church alliance are also hoping to help the Syrians assimilate while they are in the area by teaching them English and offering other support.

Cirencester Mayor Mark Harris gave his support to the move: “I think it’s a fantastic idea to help people who have been through some terrible things.

“There have been some people saying ‘what about our homeless?’ My message to them is simple: If you know someone without a home, get in touch with me or a councillor and we will make sure something is done.

“I absolutely understand the way some people feel, but I’m ready to throw my weight into helping in any way I can.”

Churches Together in Cirencester is urging anyone who wants to help to get in touch. People can help by offering skills, items or even a home for the families, of which the rent will be paid by central government.
