A DAUGHTER has spoken of her family’s lucky escape after her father lost consciousness in a “nano-second blackout”.

Mark Warriner and his family were driving back from a day out at a wildlife park on Wednesday at around 4pm when disaster struck.

As they drove through Barnsley on the B4425 near Cirencester, Mark lost consciousness, veering off the road and rolling the car on to its roof.

Miraculously, none of the family was hurt but his 71-year-old mother, Grace Chance, was trapped in the upside-down car.

Mark, 49, and from the Beeches in Cirencester, managed to wriggle free.

His daughter April was not in the car with them. She said: “He remembers asking my nan for a mint and then putting down the window. The next thing he knew someone was calling ‘Mark, Mark, watch the verge’.

“He tried to correct the car but it was too late and the car went through some small trees and rolled onto its roof.

“What’s awful though is that when my dad was waving down cars, three drove straight past without stopping. He even had blood on him.”

Finally the family got some good luck as their neighbour and friend Dave Knowles happened to drive past in his van.

He quickly pulled over and rang the emergency services.

Fire-fighters managed to extract Grace from the car. She was shaken and covered in cuts and bruises but had escaped serious injury.

Doctors now believe Mark had a nano-second blackout, possibly caused by his heart.

“He’s still in hospital and he might not get out before next week.  His heartbeat is really erratic and he might need a pacemaker,” April said.

“It’s unlucky because he’s never smoked and he’s really fit, he still plays full games of football.”

Mark had never had any kind of blackout before and did not know of any previous heart condition.

“In a way it’s lucky though,” April said. “It’s better to have it happen then when they were only going at about 35mph.

“It’s just really unfortunate there were three generations in the car. I think someone is looking down on them because they just missed two trees.”

April added that the rest of the family were mostly unharmed though her nan did “look like she’s been through a couple of rounds with Mike Tyson”.

The family thanked their neighbour Dave for helping them, saying he was “absolutely brilliant”.

A police spokesman said: “Police closed the road for two hours while emergency services worked.

“Fortunately the accident was just outside a 30mph zone so the car was not travelling very fast when it left the road.”
