Cirencester A team round-up

CIRENCESTER'S A team returned to Division One of the North Gloucestershire Foursomes League in 2015.

However, their achievement was then slightly tempered by the loss of three players with a combined handicap of one.

After an understandably difficult start to the new season, the team are definitely now punching above their weight.

The first game of the season was away at current champions Lilley Brook where the team were beaten. Two home draws followed against Forest Hills and Cotswold Hills before another tight loss at Minchinhampton.

Throughout these initial games, a great team spirit and desire started to show itself.

A great win against Broadway (5-1) was followed this week by a home win against Lilley Brook (5½-½) and the team are now third in the league.

All players deserve credit for their efforts so far but special mention should be made of Fergus Marchington & Alex Hobson, the number one pairing, who are in great winning form and junior Chalmers Phinn who has joined up with the equally young Dan Gregory to put together two good wins recently.

Cirencester A 5.5

Lilley Brook A 0.5

Fergus Marchington & Alex Hobson won 7&5; Mitch Caunt & Jordon Laycock won 5&3; Dan Gregory & Chalmers Phinn won 3&2; Jerry Homan-Green & Steve Bishop won 2&1; Hamish Mason & Darren Robison won 7&6; Mark Priest & Tom Stone halved.

Lilley Brook B 5

Cirencester B 1

THE Cirencester B Team suffered one of its worst away defeats of the season at Lilley Brook GC.

One could have been excused for thinking that they were suffering hangovers from the Captain’s Dinner Dance held the evening before, but this was not the case. Cirencester lost the first four matches by a significant margin with the usually dependable pairing of captain Jonathan Wells and Andy Miles going down 4&3 only to be swiftly followed by David Exton and Paul Simmonds falling victims (4&3) to a strong home pairing.

Things didn’t get any better when Duncan Barnes and Russell Cameron lost 3&1 only to be matched by Chris Berens & Steve Springthorpe’s loss by the same margin.

The only bright spot of the day was the success of Brian Kelly and Derek Stewart who squeezed home with a 1 up win.

The team’s fate was already sealed before the improving David Michael and Andy Ponting came home 2&1 losers.
