STREET lights play a big part in whether we feel safe. Walking down a dark, unlit street at night could make anyone feel uneasy, whether they be old or young, male or female.

So shouldn't we try to at least have one street light on every residential road in town? We know Cirencester is a safe, small town - certainly safer to walk around in during the evening than some of the bigger towns and cities in our country. But despite that, we should take every precaution.

City Bank may seem like a quiet road but it is only a stone's throw away from the bustling town centre of Cirencester. Children from Cirencester Primary School regularly use this street to walk to and from lessons.

What happens when it gets dark during the winter months? Without street lights people could fall, tripping on an unseen pothole or a kerb, and cause themselves serious injury. People shouldn't be forced to use a torch like they currently do. Without streetlights burglars might view City Bank as an ideal street to target, as no-one will be able to spy them in the dark.

If four teenage boys believe City Bank needs to be lit up at night, I think we should listen. Whatever makes an area in our town just that tiny bit safer is worth thinking about, even if it just helps just a small handful of people feel better walking home at night.
