TONY Curry has said a massive thank you to everyone in Cirencester for their support and generous donations after his trailer was stolen.

He came in to the Standard to collect a cheque for £1,210.09 on Friday.

The 70-year-old grandfather from Chesterton near Cirencester has been mowing the grass on the town’s roundabouts and verges in his spare time for more than three years.

Yet on Easter Saturday his £1,200 trailer was stolen while he was mowing, and he feared he would never be able to do the voluntary work he loved so much again.

But after news of the theft spread through social media, and in the Standard, people of the town stepped forward in their masses to help.

A staggering £1,200 was raised in just one weekend to ensure Tony Curry could continue with his vital work – and the volunteer said he has been blown away by it all.

On Friday he was presented with a cheque for £1,210.09, all donated by the people of Cirencester, and Tony said he wanted to express his heartfelt thanks to everyone.

“A massive thank you to everyone,” said Tony. “I’ve got my trailer securely locked away now and when I’m on the roundabouts I have a special lock on the drawbar so it can’t be taken out of the van.

“This was an unbelievable response to something that I thought could ruin me.”

Tony added that now, when he is mowing, people stop and come and say hello and thank you to him.

“I feel like I’ve made so many new friends,” he said. “And I actually love doing what I do. It’s a lovely town and all these years the roundabouts have looked a disgrace and this is a way for me to give something back.”
